Visiting Mongolian Teachers

Mongolia

In the upper library, a group Mongolian teachers explained the results of a survey that american and mongolian students took.

On Tuesday, November 3rd, teachers from Mongolia arrived at Emma to teach students of Global Perspectives On Modern History. Students got a chance to experience a new culture and  also a new  language! It was interesting to see the contrasts and similarities in education.

Biology Field Trip to The Wild Center

Students who take Biology left school early in the morning on November 6. They went to the Wild Center in Tupper Lake. After three hours on the bus, they arrived at the Wild Center with joy and excitement. Students learned a lot through experiencing three different activities. First, they watched a short movie that introduced them to the basic sense of nature. Then, although it was cold and snowy, students went hiking and came into contact with the beauty of nature. They also got a chance to learn how to use radio telemetry to track endangered species. Last but not least, students explored the museum. They learned scientific quotation and gained  a lot of knowledge. Students were cold and tired at the end of the day, but the joy of observing and comprehending nature effaced the exhaustion and brought satisfaction to the students.

FASO coffee house

12138_104746189539305_100000117731846_137007_7169464_nOn Friday, FASO held a fun cultural coffee house where students from different countries show their unique abilities. There were performances such as Thai dances, Chinese songs, English songs, Chinese traditional instrument, Bolivian dances, a Hong Kong skit, and fashion show. In the end, all the FASO members sang the song “It’s a Small World” in 14 different languages! This event was really successful and not only let but also encourages Emma girls to learn more about other cultures outside of America. Congrats to FASO for their fruitful results :) !

What are you?

PB040079

Kip Fulbeck

This question is more complicated than it sounds, especially for a multiracial person like Kip Fulbeck, who is  both Chinese and American. The first in this year’s Serving & Shaping Her World Speakers Series, Fulbeck, a slam poet/filmmaker/author extraordinaire came to Emma Willard today to explain his Hapa Project in which he photographed different kinds of people related only by their mixed heritage and asked them to identify themselves. He also shared information about his other projects focusing on tattoos and his upcoming project on children.  After the assembly, there was a crowded book signing event for his Hapa project  books which got sold out within minutes. Fulbeck also participated in English classes, visited our school’s literary magazine group, Triangle, came to the swim team’s practice (because he used to be a big swimmer), and ate lunch and dinner with the students. His extensive visit gave a new perspective of identity to all the students. Hear an excerpt from his performance here.

Emma girls going up for the lay-up

Tryouts for basketball were held in the Mott Gymnasium on Monday. Everyone was very excited to get back onto the courts for some fun, challenging basketball time. There was a fairly good turnout of athletes this year. Emma girls of all skill levels came to show their moves on the court and earn a spot on junior varsity and varsity basketball. Go, Emma!

Loitering allowed

2009-11-02_matthewEnglish instructor Todd Matthew encourages students to slow down and hang out. Loitering won’t necessarily lead to mischief or vandalism, but may allow us to appreciate our surroundings. He tells about his trek through northern England, when he often loitered, taking in the local flavor. Hear him here.

Race for Hepatitis C

race for a cause

The people who made this event happen. On the right, the race's honoree, Betsy Lamoreaux

On a not to hot, not too cold “perfect day for running” this morning on November 1, the Emma Willard community, along with local people and friends and family of honoree Betsy Lamoreaux, came together to race for Hepatitis C around our campus. The 5K race included race participants who ran and walked the race supported by many student and faculty volunteers and organizers for Race for a Cause, a community service group here at Emma. After the race around the picturesque autumn leaves on the route, there was an after-race party in the gym with donated baked goods to celebrate the event. Winners of the race based on different age categories recieved a raffle basket prize. This event was truly a wonderful way for a community to show their support and to make a difference in finding a cure for Hepatitis C.

Fair Trade Chocolate Sale

FairTradeChocolateSale On Halloween, the community service Fair Trade sold chocolate during lunch outside the dining hall. Fair Trade is a nonprofit community service that sells traded coffee, chocolate, tea, and hot cocoa to provide a way for students and faculty to help with creating an equal market. Students and faculty could also place an order if they want it at a later time. Fair Trade was very successful and sold a lot of yummy chocolate! They gave out free samples for students to try, and there was a chance for a lucky winner! It is perfect for halloween because you can treat (or trick) your friends!

Happy Halloween!
