Quiet On the Heights…

P1010113

Being the day before a national holiday, the faculty at Emma Willard are given the day off…making the campus even more quiet than it already is in its current summer state.   However, not everyone is missing… Some of the greatest people you will ever meet are still on campus. Who are they, and why are they on campus if no one else has to be? The answer is that they are members of the Emma Willard Security Team (seen above). Always attentive and extremely kind, the EWS security guards are there to watch over the Emma Willard community 24/7/365. So whether you have a problem when it’s 15 below zero, or you’re looking for someone to let you into your office the day before a national holiday because you felt compelled to put in a few extra hours- security is always there for you, and always there to help.
Thanks guys!

Phila gives back

phila09Phila is a philanthropy practicum of 12 students that work to help non-profit organizations both locally and internationally. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous alumna and her husband, Phila begins each year with $4,000 to give away. They accept grant applications and take the time to make thoughtful decisions.

Grant funds this year went to three local and one international non-profits. In memory of the prospective student who was a victim in the attacks in Mumbai this past year, Phila gave $200 to Room to Read’s Girls Education program in India. A $200 donation will provide a full scholarship for one year to a young girl.

The $4,000 was divided up accordingly:

  • Hope 7 Community Center’s food pantry: $1,000. Hope 7 applied for and received a matching gift of $1,000 from a foundation in Connecticut.
  • Commission on Economic Opportunity: $1,300
  • Unity House’s Street Ministry food pantry and Basics for Babies program: $1,500
  • Room to Read, India, Girls Education: $200

And during a food drive in April, Phila collected over 100 food items that went to families in need in the Capital District.

Julia Johnson '10 leads the 100th procession on Mount Ida

Emma Willard School held its commencement exercises today. This was the 100th commencement on the Mount Ida campus. The first class to graduate on the Mount Ida campus processed across the inner campus on June 8, 1910. The school’s graduation exercises were held in conjunction with the dedication of Sage Hall, Slocum Hall, and the Gymnasium, now Alumnae Chapel. The new campus was made possible by the generosity of leading female philanthropist Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage, an 1848 graduate of Emma Hart Willard’s Troy Female Seminary, as the school was known until 1895.

Senior Tea

senior_teaSeniors returned from their retreat this afternoon in time for senior tea, a long-stranding tradition at Emma. The school’s teacup collection was increased significantly in the past two years with donations from alumnae, parents, and friends of the school. Each senior selects a cup from the collection for her tea. Miss Kellas’s silver tea service was on display, and each senior took home a commemorative silver spoon.

World Refugee Day

wrdThe Albany Field Office of the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants is holding a gala on June 20, 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. on World Refugee Day.
