Kate Shadlock Films!

Kate Shadlock in Come Life

Two of Kate’s films films will be shown on WMHT’s TV Film Festival this summer.  The first, “Come Life” (click link or picture to watch the show), in which Kate played the lead character, was shown on Sunday, June 24.

The second film, “Vanished”, along with an interview of Kate will be shown on Sunday July 8, 2012 at 10:30pm.  “Vanished” was directed and filmed by Kate as her final project in her Film and Video Class with Mr. Van Wormer. The subject of this film is an architecturally unique circa 1842 Loudonville, NY home. This property was acquired by the neighboring Catholic Parish, St. Pius X Church, from its aging owner and was demolished.  Kate believed in the significance of this property and, once understanding the irretrievable fate of the structure, became determined to have this home live on in as many ways as possible.  Tune into WMHT to see this moving film.

Sweet Sounds of Chopin

Every year, a student performer “sets the tone for the year” at convocation. This year, Jingyun “Charlotte” Xiang ’12 played the Finale from Frederic Chopin’s Sonata in B Minor, op. 58.

SNOOPY Musical

On Friday, February 25, and on Saturday, February 26, campus players presented SNOOPY!, the musical. The play was based on the comic strip “Peanuts” by Charles M. Schulz. And the music selection was from Larry Grossman. Director Valerie Carlson devoted her time into the preparation of the musical and urged the cast and production team members to do their best. Danielle ’11 played the main character, Snoopy. The musical drew a perfect ending and everyone was amazed about the wonderful singing and acting of the show.

Emma Idol

For the past few weeks, Emma students have been taking the spotlight on stage during Morning Reports for Emma Idol! Generally, there are three contestants every Tuesday and Friday morning and the audience (students) vote on their favorite of the day. It’s a blast to see the different singing and dancing performances done in a solo or groups. Check out the videos page for highlights.

Visiting Guest Artists

Jennifer Girtell performing in front of the advanced ballet class

Despite the crazy blizzard, Judy Bejarano, Strong Family dance artist, and her assistant Jennifer Girtell came up to Mount Ida for a week of dancing for guest artist week. Judy Bejarano is a nationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer whose work has been described as “…existing in the poignant space where comedy and tragedy intersect.” She, along with her assistant, choreographed a new piece for the Dance Company and has been working with them intensively throughout the week. The visiting artists also held classes for all levels of dance and performed a piece for the students. Their visit on campus has certainly brought much grace and movement to the snowy campus this past week.

Emma Idol

On Friday (11/2), the Chinese II class, Jenny Georgieva, and Lolo and Hannah performed for Emma Idol. We all enjoyed the singing performances that they gave, and we look forward to the next Emma Idol performances!

Emma theatre presents “Snoopy!”

On Friday, February 25, at 7:30 pm, and Saturday, February 26, at 1:30 pm, in Kiggins Hall, Emma Willard students will present Snoopy!, which features many of Charles Schulz’s beloved Peanuts characters, such as Snoopy, Woodstock, Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Sally, and Peppermint Patty. While written after You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, it is not a sequel; it is a companion piece. The songs are unbelievably catchy (in the best possible way), and their bounciness belies the sophistication of the music (and thus of the “chops” needed by the cast). The script follows the gang over the four seasons as they start by wondering “When Do the Good Things Start?” and end by realizing that “Just One Person” who believes in you can make all the difference to your ability to believe in yourself, using material taken directly from Schultz’s comic strips—most often, in fact, using those comics verbatim. It is a lively, fun musical show for kids and their adults.  More details here.

Dance Performance

On Wednesday, January 26, Emma Willard dancers performed for the entire school in Kiggins. It was quite a sight to see, all the different level dancers performing on stage, lights dimmed, and spotlight on them. The step team transitioned into different levels of jazz and ballet performances. To view highlights of the show, check out our videos page.
